JOB DESCRIPTION

Dispensing opticians are front-line staff who are ready to meet customers’ needs in terms of optimal eye care solutions and services, as well as provide referrals to other eye care professionals when needed. The optician works with the prescription prepared by the optometrist and takes the necessary measurements for the manufacturing of glasses. They are also able to perform certain technical procedures for contact lenses such as measuring and fitting. The dispensing optician works closely with optometrists in order to provide clientele with a complete and professional service.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receive customers in a courteous and professional manner, either on the phone or in person.
  • Assist customers during their visit in the store/clinic.
  • Evaluate and identify the customer’s needs with regards to their choice of frames and ophthalmic lenses based on their prescription.
  • Determine the specifications of the glasses or contact lenses according to the prescription prepared by a professional or by analyzing the customer’s glasses or contact lenses and by measuring eye curvature, pupillary distance and facial width using optical instruments.
  • Inform customers about the different options, products and available promotions to facilitate their decision-making process.
  • Perform lens edging in-store in compliance with ISO standards and verify quality of edging prior to delivery.
  • Undertake minor and major repairs on glasses.
  • Analyze problem cases.
  • Bill customers in accordance with the company’s policies and procedures.
  • Work in close collaboration with the floor team in order to ensure consistent customer service.
  • Depending on in-store traffic, they may also be asked to:
    • Schedule optometrist appointments.
    • Open and prepare patient files for visit.
    • Perform pretests.
    • Undertake any other task necessary to the smooth running of the store/clinic.

REQUIREMENTS
  • College opticianry diploma
  • Member of the Ordre des opticiens d’ordonnances du Québec
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Talent for identifying and listening to customers’ needs
  • Ability to communicate well with people
  • Persuasive sales skills
  • Team player
  • Bilingual (depending on store/clinic)
  • Available to work evenings and Saturday (rotation according to store/clinic’s opening hours)
