Eye exam and health
How much is an eye exam?

A comprehensive eye exam costs $130. Why?

At Doyle, in addition to including all tests recommended by the Ordre des optométristes du Québec, an eye exam always includes fundus imaging. This test allows us to see inside your eye and detect diseases more quickly and easily.

For people 65 years of age and over, the eye exam is covered by RAMQ, but there is a $40 fee for the imaging. Although it is strongly recommended, the imaging test is not mandatory.

Eye exams for children 17 and under are covered 100% by RAMQ.

How often should you see an optometrist?

Unless otherwise advised by your optometrist, it is recommended that you have one eye exam per year for children and people 65 years of age and older. The exam is covered by RAMQ, so take advantage of it!

Between the ages of 18 and 65, eye exams can be done every 2 years. However, contact-lens wearers and people with more serious vision problems must be seen annually.

Book an appointment here with one of our qualified optometrists.

What age should you get your child's eyes tested?

A first eye exam is recommended before your child’s first day of school (3 to 5 years old), to make sure they have all the tools they need to succeed.

However, some children have vision problems from birth. If you see that your child has a “lazy” eye or if they seem to have difficulty clearly seeing objects that are near to them, an evaluation of their visual functions can be done starting at 6 months old.

What are dry eye symptoms and treatment?

Do your eyes water? Do they burn or sting? Do you feel like you have sand in your eyes, or does your vision fluctuate throughout the day? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may have dry eye syndrome.

There are several products and treatments available. How can you figure out what might work for you? Read our advice in this article

Don't hesitate to book an appointment with one of our optometrists if your symptoms don't seem to be improving.

When should you seek emergency eye care?

IMPORTANT: If you experience flashes of light, a sudden loss of vision, or have a foreign object in your eye, contact us right away for an emergency appointment with one of our optometrists.

All of the following symptoms can be considered an eye emergency, depending on their severity: eye pain, vision loss, eye and eyelid discomfort. Feel free to read our article on eye emergencies, or call one of our boutiques to determine if you need to see an optometrist.

How do you book an optometrist appointment?

It's very simple! Check out your optometrist's availabilities in our real time agenda.

How long does an eye exam last?

At Doyle, we take great care to provide you with the most comprehensive eye exam possible, which is why it takes about 30 minutes.

How do you get a copy of your prescription?
To get a copy of your prescription, simply make a request in store or write us via our chat service. Our team will send it to you by email. Please note that you do not need your prescription to place an order on our website – we take your prescription directly from your file.
How long is a prescription good for?
Unless otherwise specified by your optometrist, your prescription is valid for 12 months.
What is the difference between an optician, an optometrist and an ophtalmologist?

An optician is a fully-trained eye care technician. They specialize in fitting glasses, frames and contact lenses. An optometrist is a professional responsible for primary eye care, such as eye exams and prescriptions. They also treat eye emergencies and many eye diseases. Finally, an ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in eye care. They are authorized to perform surgical procedures, as well as provide pre-operative and post-operative care.

I would like to see an ophthalmologist, can an optometrist help me?

A referral from a professional is required to see an ophthalmologist. Fortunately, your optometrist can diagnose, treat, and monitor many eye conditions. If your condition requires an ophthalmology evaluation, your optometrist can refer you to a specialist.

Why did I get charged extra?

Some conditions require additional tests that are not included in the examination fees, and are not covered by RAMQ. In these situations, there may be additional fees. If relevant, your optometrist will discuss with you the importance of getting these tests done.

Frames and lenses
Why can't you change your contact lens brand yourself?

You cannot decide to change your type of contact lenses without first talking to your optometrist. Your optometrist must make sure that the product you want to try is well-suited for your eyes, in terms of both comfort and oxygenation. Please note that wearing contact lenses that are not properly adapted to your eyes could have harmful consequences, such as causing a lack of oxygenation to the eyes, irritation, inflammation, or infection in your eyes.

How should you care for your contact lenses?

Except for daily lenses which should be thrown out every night, your lenses should be soaked daily in a disinfectant solution that is recommended by your optometrist. This means that you should remove them every single night. Do not store your lenses in water. You should empty your solution and replace it with fresh solution daily. Once you have finished a bottle of disinfecting solution, use the opportunity to change your case as well.

Respect the recommended wearing time (daily, 2 weeks, 1 month) in order to limit the risk of infection and avoid developing an intolerance to your contact lenses.

*Note that monthly lenses are good for one month after opening, not for wearing 30 times.

OUR EXPERT TIP: Change your lenses on the first of every month to limit confusion on how long your lenses will last.

To learn more, read our article on contact lens care.

Sleeping with contacts: a good or bad idea?

Given the risk of infection and the lack of oxygen to the eyes, it is no longer recommended to sleep with your lenses.

How long do contacts last?
It depends on the type of lenses you wear. There are daily lenses (which are discarded every day), bi-monthly lenses (which are discarded every two weeks), and monthly lenses (which are discarded every month). For each type of lens, it is very important to respect the wearing time recommended by your professional and the prescribed replacement date.
Can you keep the same glasses frames and change lenses?
Yes, of course! As long as the frames are in good condition, it is possible to replace only the lenses.
What can you do with old prescription glasses?
If you wish to dispose of your old glasses, you can bring them to the boutique at your next appointment. We donate frames that are no longer in use to charitable organizations, such as Optometrists Without Borders.
How do you clean your glasses?

To properly clean your glasses, run them under warm water. Then, using a mild soap, gently massage the lenses and the entire frame to remove grease and other dirt. Avoid hot water and paper towels, which can damage your lenses! Learn more about how to keep your glasses clean and in good condition in our article.

Where do you craft your lenses?
Our team of experienced opticians craft the vast majority of lenses on site! All Doyle boutiques are equipped with lens-crafting laboratories. For specialty lenses, we work with three reputable external laboratories in Quebec.

Are Doyle boutiques franchises?

Doyle does not operate under a franchise model, but by association. We are one of the last groups in the industry to be 100% owned by Quebec professionals. Since 2015, we have been partnering with the best independent clinics in Quebec. By becoming co-owners, we can support our local associates while they focus on their practice and their clients. Are you a Canadian company?

Doyle is a proud Quebec company! In December 1978, optometrist Luc Doyle founded Doyle in the heart of Montreal's historic St. Henri district - a family-owned and operated store that has been serving customers for over 40 years. The founder's son, Patrick Doyle, took over the business in 2015. Keeping the same values, but breathing new life into the group, Patrick has proudly announced the opening of his 21st boutique in December 2021!
